PureCircle, Malaysian Land Development Agency Will Collaborate On Cultivation of Stevia

by PureCircle | July 12, 2019 | News SHARE:

Pahang, Malaysia, July 12, 2019 – PureCircle (LSE: PURE), the world’s leading producer and innovator of great-tasting stevia sweeteners, signed a letter of intent with the Federal Land Development Authority of Malaysia (FELDA) to collaborate on stevia plant and other cash crop cultivation as part of FELDA’s Settlers’ Development Programme. As part of this agreement, PureCircle will provide its industry-leading technical expertise in profitable stevia crop cultivation.

This strategic partnership was commemorated at FELDA’s annual Settlers’ Day event on July 7.  Officiating at this important event were: Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad; Chief Minister of Pahang, Dato Seri’ Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail; and the Minister of Economic Affairs, Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali.

PureCircle is pleased to back Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s vision to support technologically driven Malaysian companies and has invested over the years more than 200 million in Malaysia Ringgit in an array of facilities and projects. The development of stevia farming presents an opportunity for Malaysian farmers to further diversify and grow Malaysia’s agricultural sector. PureCircle now employs over 1,200 people globally and 500 in Malaysia. The company is the leading global producer of great-tasting stevia leaf ingredients.

PureCircle has overcome the challenges previously facing stevia leaf sweeteners: taste, supply and cost.  The company’s next generation stevia sweeteners, like Reb M, have a clean, sugar-like taste.  PureCircle has ramped up its ability to supply these next generation sweeteners in the large supplies which food and beverage companies require – and cost effectively to them.

FELDA is a Malaysian government agency established for land development and relocation purposes, part of which involves organizing smallholder farms growing cash crops.  FELDA has also launched a number of private corporate entities. The largest of these, FGV Holdings Berhad is considered to be the world’s largest plantation operator, with over 800,000 hectares of oil palms mainly across Peninsular Malaysia, but also including other parts of Malaysia and the world.

By way of background, the story of stevia is evolving. Not long ago, it was viewed as a plant-based, zero-calorie, single-ingredient sweetener which worked well in some beverage and food applications. Today PureCircle offers a range of next generation stevia leaf sweeteners, including Reb M and D, which taste great and work well across multiple categories. These sweeteners help beverage and food companies increase their offerings of zero- and low- calories products without sacrificing taste.

About stevia

  • Given the growing global concerns about obesity and diabetes, beverage and food companies are working responsibly to reduce sugar and calories in their products, responding to both consumers and health and wellness advocates. Sweeteners from the stevia plant offer sugar-like taste and are becoming an increasingly important tool for these companies.
  • Like sugar, stevia sweeteners are from plants. But unlike sugar, they enable low-calorie and zero-calorie formulations of beverages and foods.
  • Stevia leaf extract is a natural-based, zero calorie, high-intensity sweetener, used by global food and beverage companies as a great-tasting zero-calorie alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners.
  • Stevia is a naturally sweet plant native to South America; today, it is grown around the world, notably in Kenya, China and the US.
  • The sweet-tasting parts of the stevia leaf are up to 350 times sweeter than sugar: stevia’s high-intensity sweetness means it requires far less water and land than sugar.
  • Research has shown that the molecules of the stevia leaf are present and unchanged in the dried stevia leaf, through the commercial extraction and purification process, and in the final stevia leaf extract product. All major global regulatory organisations, across 65 countries, have approved the use of high-purity stevia leaf extracts in food and beverages.
